Friday Wrap-up

Image
Woot! Friday! It has been once again an emotional week. The Kid continues to hack up a lung but at least he is in good spirits. I love living here but for the love of God, please work on your cough syrup. When I was in the hospital for my c-section, I had a terrible cough. Every time I coughed it kind of felt like I was being ripped in two. Fun fun. So I went to the nurses' station and asked for some cough syrup. The nurse (the nurses at the hospital were all kinds of awesome, they got a gift basket when I left. The baby nurses? Not so much. The doctors? I will hunt them down.) looked in the medicine cabinet, look annoyed and then turned to me and said "I'm so sorry, we don't have the herbal stuff right now, just the actual medicinal cough syrup". I don't think she expected my paw to grab that bottle as fast as I did. I mean, I think there is a lot to be said for homeopathy, like wine and stuff, but please, give me the chemicals. My mind is not powerful enough...

Throwback Thursday: Beetlejuice

Image
Back when I was about 9, I was staying with my grandparents in Sombra and I probably was being a pain in the ass, so my Grandma sent me off to the Pic n' Pay to rent a video. I checked out the small collection of videos and my eyes settled upon this VHS cover. This totally looks like a feel good movie I was intrigued. I brought it back, and carefully covered the PG13 label with my marsupial-sized thumb. I popped it into the VCR and for 90 minutes, I was entranced. This was everything I ever wanted from a film; it was dark, it was funny, it was a little scary. It was everything. And so, on this throwback Thursday, I present the reasons why Beetlejuice , in my humble and sometimes wrong opinion, rocks so hard. Two words: Lydia Deetz . Oh Winona, I will always have a place in my heart for you. You have starred in some of my favourite films you lovable little klepto you. Lydia Deetz was what I wanted to be so badly. She was dark and unhappy, morbid and full of spite. Oh, she ...

Random Musings

Image
It's a rainy Wednesday morning in the city. It's dark and depressing and kind of perfect. Of course I wore my rain boots. Huzzah! Last night I made curry and then sat on the sofa in a sort of post-spice coma. I'm tired. It was hard to fall asleep last night because my brain was in overload; there's been a lot of crap going on and to be honest, I'm getting through it. Present grateful Tova is much better than past uber stressed angry Tova. In the past, if all this crap was going on, I would have crawled into bed and said "Wake me up when unicorns start farting rainbows". But I can't do that. I's has got the responsibilities. Siiiigh. So this post is just random musings... Sick kid: The Husband got a call from the daycare in the afternoon that the Kid had a 39 degree fever. The reason the Husband is the main contact for the daycare is a) language and b) he knows I'd give myself a stroke every time I would see their number on the display or, I w...

Halloween Decorating and a Gift from a Friend

Image
Yesterday was a rough day. I just wanted to say thank you to everybody for your amazing support and kind words. It means the world to me. I had the day off yesterday and I didn't get nearly enough done. The Husband told me to relax and said "you still have three weeks" to which I responded "Oh God! Only 3 weeks?!?!". I got a lot of decorating done during the weekend which I am happy about; a) I feel less stressed and b) the Kid isn't traumatized because the change has been gradual. On the weekend I didn't get to hang a lot of the new "paintings" because the Husband was around. When he saw me holding a hammer he looked suspicious and said "Why do you have a hammer?" to which I responded "I think the real question here is why don't you have a hammer?" Yeah, that went well. To feel better, I watched Hocus Pocus and Beetlejuice while I got crap done. Those are some of my favorite Halloween films and they kind of helped...

To Danny

Last night I found out my cousin passed away. It is a shock and I think we are all still reeling from the news. When I awoke this morning, all my memories of him came flooding back and it is an emotional time. Danny grew up with his brother David and his mom and dad in the town my dad is from; Sombra. Sombra is a tiny town in Southern Ontario and a place that will always and forever be a part of my life. It was the only place that never changed and for a kid like me who had to move every 3-4 years, Sombra was home. It was a place of magical long summer nights, my grandma's apple pie (since she's passed, I can't eat apple pie), waking up to the smell of toast which she would slather with butter and sitting on my Papa's lap as he would jokingly yell at me "Kid, you're blocking the game!". It was what a childhood should be and the warmth and love that filled that house stays with me to this day. It was a place where I could walk along down the parkway to th...

My Thoughts on Sharing

I'm so going to probably be blasted for this... but meh, I'm opinionated. After too many bunless cheeseburgers this evening, I was thinking about the Kid and some situations we've been in over the past couple of years. Namely, sharing. Now, every weekday, the Kid is at daycare and he is expected to share the daycare toys. And while I'm sure he gets pissy about it, it's the law, and I support it. Probably explains why he hides his crap all the time when he is at home. To which I want to say to him "Dude, Hot Wheels are so not my thing. My Little Ponies? Yeah, you'd have to fight me." At the playground, there is communal equipment and yes, the Kid is expected to share that as well. When he is on the swing and another kid is waiting, after a few more pushes, I turn to the waiting kid and say "your mom says you're adopted. Go talk to her about it." I joke, I joke. My German isn't nearly so fluent. But, yes, we make the Kid wait his tu...

A Walk to Remember...with the Kid

Image
Yesterday we met up with the inlaws and the Husband's Aunt, Uncle, Cousin and her Partner and Their Kid. The Other Kid is the same age as The Kid. The plan was to meet near the Schönbrunn (palace) zoo. Hike up through the woods to the Gloriette and then hike back down. On subways, the Kid will stay in his stroller and yell at people who obstruct his view of the subway doors. Anytime we leave the subway he waves and exclaims "BYE BYE!!!!", the same goes for elevators. He can make the most dour and sour of people laugh and for this, I get the prouds. When we got to the palace, the Kid was out of his stroller like an airborne disease. He walked and talked and babbled and had such a great time. He is fascinated by ditches and probably bitches (a poem in the making?). As we walked through the forest, we came upon some squirrels. Other people be all like "let's feed them and watch them come up to us, but we must be very very quiet." This works somewhat. But I ki...
